Watershed Ecology
The Skeena is a spectacularly diverse and beautiful landscape, providing a wide range of rich habitats for plants, wildlife and fish. The diversity of its estuaries, flood plains, rivers, lakes, swamps and alpine habitat provide home to healthy populations of grizzly & black bear, wolverine, wolf, moose, deer, mountain goat and a variety of birds. Dozens of genetically unique salmon population provide the basis of the food chain upon which so many other species depend. Salmon ecosystems such as the Skeena are unique in that they are one of the only systems in the world that experience nutrient flow from the ocean to the land. After these salmon return to spawn, they die leaving an abundance of marine derived nutrients to feed the forests and water systems, creating rich ecosystems out of nutrient poor soils and cool climates.
