The Future Is Selective
This summer, B.C. salmon fishing has offered a glimpse into a sustainable future.
In the Skeena, fisheries have opened with strong returns for species like pink, sockeye, and steelhead. Although warm water and low levels posed challenges, the resilience of the fish and innovative fishing techniques provided a hopeful outlook.
The real highlight, however, is how we fish. When we visited Kitselas KT5’s fish wheel and the Gitanyow Fish Camp at Lax An Zok, we witnessed firsthand the efficiency, precision, and sustainability of selective fishing methods like fish wheels and dip nets. These practices minimize bycatch and protect vulnerable species, setting a standard for the future of responsible fishing.
Selective fishing is leading the way forward. Let’s support these efforts by asking your grocer for Authentic Indigenous Seafood the next time you shop for salmon.
