SkeenaWild Environmental Education Assistant

SkeenaWild is seeking an energetic, creative, and enthusiastic candidate to assist with our environmental education and volunteer stewardship programs. The candidate will work alongside our Education & Volunteer Program Coordinator.

Job Description / Posting

Eligibility: Funding for this position is provided through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. To be eligible, you must be between 15 and 30, have been a full-time student this year, and return to a full-time program in September 2024. Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial legislation and regulations.

Start Date: June 24, 2024 (flexible)
End Date: August 30, 2024 (flexible)

Location: Terrace, BC

Hours & Compensation: This position offers a range of 26 to 35 hours per week, with some weekend work required. Wage is between $18 – $20 per hour depending on experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Studying or demonstrated interest in one of the following fields: biology, ecology, earth and ocean sciences, environmental management, fisheries or natural resource management, Indigenous studies, education, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in the mission and activities of SkeenaWild Conservation Trust.
  • Experience working with children and youth.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills; comfortable working with the public.
  • A self-starter with the ability to work independently and problem-solve, and to work as part of a team within a non-profit organization.
  • Comfortable working in an office setting, at community events, and streamsides.
  • Good computer skills and social media skills.
  • Knowledge of the Skeena region’s wildlife, habitats, and conservation issues would be an asset.
  • Added assets would be having a driver’s license, having access to a vehicle and first aid training

Job Description:

The role of the Environmental Education Assistant is a hands-on, energy intensive position, balancing administrative and planning work with leading hands-on science and nature-based camp activities and play. You will assist the Environment & Volunteer Program Coordinator in leading our school programs and work on updating previous camp curriculum to create unique and engaging outdoor summer camp programming. In addition, you will conduct research and undertake activities pertinent with our new volunteer stewardship program, as well as promote our initiatives at various community events.

Duties & Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and plan curriculum, including inquiry science-based activities, arts, games, and crafts.
  • Lead summer science camps for groups of children and youth, including preparation and clean up.
  • Deliver community education and awareness programs, such as nature interpretative walks and school programs.
  • Assist with the SkeenaWild volunteer stewardship program’s organization and activities.
  • Public outreach and community engagement at events as they arise.
  • Administrative duties and other project-related tasks as required
